Tip of The Day – Dehumidifier water is gold
11 MarWhat do you do with your de-humidifier water? Water your plants with it! It is like liquid gold! It’s equivalent to watering with distilled water, and your plants will flourish because it doesn’t contain fluoride and chlorine.
Tip of the Day – Preventing tomato leaf blight
7 MarI have many, many happy memories of hanging out and helping my father in his garden growing up. And now my kids love hanging out in his garden! They love pulling up the carrots, and harvesting the many fruits and veggies.
I’m excited to have my dad – one of my favorite gardeners – share one of his tips in today’s blog post.
Tomato Tips
To prevent tomato-leaf blight, water plants from below and keep foliage as dry as possible.
Also, to keep plants moist, mulch with grass clippings or straw. Since your grass clippings are surely free of broadleaf killer or any chemicals, you can be reassured that nothing harmful will carry over to the tomato plants.

Tip of the Day – Amending your soil
3 Mar
Mel’s Green Garden Tip of the Day: Weeds, weeds, weeds. One of my favorite tips from my Grandma is to use your grass clippings as mulch. It provides your soil with great nutrients, plus the layer of grass suppresses weeds and conserves water for your plants. I also throw my coffee grounds over the grass clippings, so it looks a little tidier. I love to put this combination around my cleome flowers when they are tall and leaning over, it helps to stake them up.
Tip of the Day – Bargain Lilies
2 MarMel’s Green Garden Tip of the Day:Must-have for your summer garden: White Flower Farm’s Strawberries and Cream Asiatic Lilium Mixture (item #S984206, 25 bulbs for $20).
This is a great Lily. It has 3 different colors of Lilies: the most beautiful shade of red, creamy white and a pretty pink. It multiplies through the years, getting more and more flowers. My mother-in-law gave it to me about 7 years ago as a gift, and I have bought more for this house. They start blooming in early June and continue blooming through July. The lilies also make great cut flowers. You cannot find a better value for your $ – order now!!!!
Tip of the Day – Winter Flowers
1 MarMel’s Green Garden Tip of the Day: When grabbing some flowers in the winter to beat spring fever, grab the potted bulbs if possible, they will last much longer and can be planted in your yard in the spring when you are planting annuals.
My absolute favorite is potted hyancinths, it will make your entire room smell like southern California. When the flower has died, then just simply place it in a grocery sack in a basement until time to plant.
Tip of the Day – Rooting Herbs
27 FebWhat to do with the expensive leftover fresh herbs from the grocery store? Make a fresh cut and place in a glass of water and place in a sunny windowsill; it will root up in a few weeks and then you can pot it up. The thyme Greg bought to make summertime soup a few weeks ago is ready for me to pot. Rosemary and basil root really fast.
Tip of the Day – Recycling Coffee Grounds
27 FebMel’s Green Garden Tip of the Day: If you are a coffee drinker, save your grounds and put them anywhere on your garden. It enriches the soil. You can also pop into Starbucks in the summer for neatly packaged bags of free used coffee grounds.
Tip of the Day – Aging Terracotta Pots
26 FebTo age a new terracotta pot so it looks older and has more character, paint it with yogurt.
Tip of the Day – Indoor Grass!
22 FebBetter than any toy, a fun activity for kids of ALL ages to beat any case of cabin fever: Grab a terracotta pot, cheap, 50 cents, Ace, Home Depot, Johannsen’s; let the kids paint the pots to their liking with washable paint; we like Crayola washable paint. The pots will dry very fast; then pot them up with potting soil and sprinkle on some grass seed; water well. Within just a few days, the green grass will appear. Keep scissors nearby for the kids to mow the pots; this is Emma’s favorite part. This is an especially great activity when it is so brown outside.
***Important note: Finding potting soil and grass seed free of synthetic chemicals and fertilizers can be tricky, so read the labels or ask for help at the store.
